Getting Around
I definitely recommend getting a rental car from Vienna. While Austria has great trains, this itinerary is packed with off-the-beaten-path hikes, scenic valleys, and charming towns that are only reachable by car. However, you can restrict this itinerary to the main cities only, which will make it enjoyable car-free.
12-Day Austria Road Trip Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in Vienna
Stay: Vienna
- Land / arrive in Vienna, check into your hotel, and relax
- Take a gentle evening walk or enjoy a coffee at a classic Viennese café
Tip: Don’t plan too much for day 1 — just let yourself adjust to the rhythm of Austria.
Day 2 – Explore Vienna’s Icons + Laxenburg Castle
Stay: Vienna
- Schönbrunn Palace – Austria’s Versailles
- St. Stephen’s Cathedral – A Gothic masterpiece
- Naschmarkt – Vienna’s tastiest market
- Afternoon escape: Laxenburg Castle (great for a relaxed stroll by the lake)
Day 3 – Wachau Valley + Hike + Arrive in Salzburg
Stay: Salzburg
Drive time: ~2 hours
- Scenic drive through the Wachau Valley (a UNESCO wine region)
- Quick stop for a hike at Wasserlochklamm, a gorge with wooden walkways and waterfalls
- Arrive in Salzburg in the evening
Day 4 – Salzburg Sights
Stay: Salzburg
- Mozartplatz & Birthplace Museum
- Hohensalzburg Fortress – incredible views
- Mirabell Gardens – Think The Sound of Music
Day 5 – Silberkarklamm + Hidden Picnic Spot
Stay: Gosau
- Hike through Silberkarklamm, a wild gorge with footbridges
- End with a picnic at Silberkarsee, a serene hidden lake
Day 6 – Schafbergbahn + Relax in the Alps
Stay: Gosau
- Ride the historic Schafbergbahn cogwheel train (or hike it)
- Panoramic summit views over Wolfgangsee
- Afternoon relaxation in Lueg, a peaceful alpine village
Day 7 – Vorderer Gosausee + Sky Ladder (Optional)
Stay: Gosau
- Hike around Vorderer Gosausee, a turquoise glacier-fed lake
- Optional: Sky Ladder via ferrata – adrenaline + epic views
Tip: Sky Ladder is for experienced climbers; skip it if you’re not used to heights.
Day 8 – Eisriesenwelt Ice Cave + Hallstatt
Stay: Biberwier
Drive time: ~3h
- Head to Hallstatt, the most photographed town in Austria
- Visit Eisriesenwelt, the largest ice cave in the world
- Head West to Biberwier – the Austrian Alps
Tip: Get to Hallstatt early to avoid crowds. Park in Obertraun and take a ferry to Hallstatt. You will avoid the crowds and get a magical view of the city from the lake.
Day 9 – Seebensee + Drachensee Hike
Stay: Biberwier
- Head to the Seebensee and Drachensee trail – arguably Austria’s most beautiful lake loop
- Cold, clear glacial lakes with jaw-dropping views — and fewer tourists than Hallstatt
Day 10 – Chill Day at Plansee + Castle Ruins
Stay: Lienz
Drive time: ~3h
- Relax by Plansee, one of Austria’s quietest lakes
- Visit the Burgruine Ehrenberg, a medieval castle ruin on a ridge
Day 11 – Olpererhütte Hike
Stay: Lienz
- Morning: Revisit Burgruine Ehrenberg or take your time leaving
- Afternoon: Hike to Olpererhütte, famous for its Instagrammable bridge
Day 12 – Scenic Drive Back to Vienna via Graz
Stay: Vienna
Drive time: ~4h
- Drive east, stopping at Wörthersee for a lakeside break
- Stop for lunch in Graz, Austria’s underrated foodie capital
- Arrive in Vienna by evening
